Tangalle is a lazy fishing town situated on one of the finest and largest bays of Sri Lanka. With a palm fringed bay, beautiful coves and vast golden beaches Tangalle is a tranquil alternative to the more vibrant tourist beach destinations. The popular bays here are Goyambooka, Medaketiya, Pallikkudawa and Medilla. Medaketiya is a beautiful quiet beach with fine white sand. The most popular tourist attraction in Tangalle is the stunning Mulkirigala rock temple. The best months to visit this scenic town is from November through April.
20KM north of Tangalla lies the large rock of Mulkirigala, reminiscent in shape to Sigiriya. The rock houses an impressive series of cave temples dating from the third century, similar to those of Dambulla.
The Dondra Point is situated in the southern most point of Sri Lanka facing the Indian Ocean. It is considered as one of the main ports for whale watching.
A record five of the seven species that inhabit the world can be seen at Rekawa Turtle Sanctuary making it one of the best places in the world to see marine turtles. Safari walks here take place at night.
